About Dr. Christy
Dr. Christy A. Walker is a higher education professional, career counselor, musician, and HBCU advocate. Known to many as "Dr. Christy", she currently works as a Talent Placement Manager for a tech non-profit in North Carolina, where she supports students preparing for IT careers through resume reviews, LinkedIn guidance, and interview coaching.
A native of Hampton, Virginia, Dr. Christy earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (A&T). While at A&T, she played clarinet in the Blue and Gold Marching Machine, performed in the symphonic band for four years, and was active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers.
After graduating from A&T, Dr. Christy began her career as an environmental chemist and engineer. She later transitioned into higher education, earning a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Old Dominion University and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University. Over more than 20 years in higher education, she has held advising, counseling, and leadership roles at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Durham Technical Community College, James Madison University, and Norfolk State University. She also developed two career services departments from the ground up, demonstrating her leadership and innovation in workforce development.
Dr. Christy is widely known for her contributions to HBCU band culture. In 1999, she and Dr. Mike Lee created The 5th Quarter, a website dedicated to showcasing HBCU marching bands. For two decades, The 5th Quarter was considered a leading resource for HBCU band enthusiasts and attracted tens of thousands of unique visitors annually until its closing in 2019. The site was profiled by the Huffington Post, and Christy has been interviewed by the New York Times, CNN, the Associated Press, HBCU Digest, and the Charlotte Post. She is also the creator of the podcast The HBCU Band Experience with Dr. Christy Walker, where she interviews marching band alumni from different HBCUs and highlights their stories.
Dr. Christy is the Lead Author of The HBCU Experience: HBCU Band Alumni Edition Volumes 1, 2, and 3, which brought together more than 70 alumni from HBCU bands to share their experiences. Her passion for storytelling, community building, and preserving HBCU culture continues to shape her work.
Dr. Christy is an Honorary Member of the National Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority (a great honor of hers), and is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity (SAI). She has served SAI in many capacities, including as an advisor for two undergraduate chapters, a charter member of an alumnae chapter, and as a National Director. She has received both the SAI Patroness Sword of Honor and the SAI Rose of Honor.
Outside of her professional and service commitments, Christy enjoys run-walking road races, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, and staying active in the performing arts. She is a member of the RTOOT (Really Terrible Orchestra of the Triangle), where she plays the clarinet, and she sings each year in the Cary Community Choir. She also marches in North Carolina A&T’s Alumni Band every homecoming, continuing her connection to the Blue and Gold Marching Machine.
